Read this cookbook: “Daisy Cakes Bakes: Keepsake Recipes for Southern Layer Cakes, Pies, Cookies, and more” by Kim Nelson (Clarkson Potter, $25) In 2011, South Carolina baker Kim Nelson went on “Shark Tank” to ask for a $50,000 investment so she could build up her small, family-owned business, which bakes and ships show-stopping Southern layer cakes from heirloom recipes.
Every male entrepreneur on the panel swooned over Nelson’s cakes, then blew her off as small time and risky.
Daisy Cakes — named for Nelson’s great-aunt, an accomplished baker who learned to cook on a wood-burning stove and lived to be 93 — went from selling 2,000 cakes in 2010 to more than 20,000 in 2016.

Set back from Regent Street’s main strip amongst a collective of restaurants and cafes, the beer and pizza franchise is the third in London, with sister locations in Minster Court and Bishopsgate.
Despite the fact my friend and I came here with the objective of slurping some beers, chowing some slices and talking at great length about our feelings, it’s clear from the piles of board games, and the groups battling it out on the shuffleboard, that Tank & Paddle is a place for fun.
The aim of the game is to scarf down almost a metre of pizza and a gut-busting side of mac’n’cheese in just fifteen minutes.
While pizza and beer is an undeniably widespread combination, Tank & Paddle still manage to find their own unique spin on it.
The house beers at Tank & Paddle are the work of partner brewery Meantime.
